What’s Going to be Hot in Landscaping in 2023!

The new year is upon us, and the holiday lights are coming down. Here is a quick overview on what landscape professionals are seeing in garden and landscaping trends for 2023. After all, gardens don’t grow in a day, and winter is the best time to plan.
To find out exactly what we can look forward to in the new year, we referenced the annual research study conducted by landscape professionals who surveyed 1,400 homeowners with above average household income. They also asked more than 100,000 email subscribers what plants, colors, and gardening themes they’re interested in every month. The result is a reliable predictor of trends.

Edible Gardens
In the everything-old-is-new-again vain, a growing trend in landscape design that’s getting a lot of buzz is edible landscapes. According to the National Gardening Association, food gardening is at its highest levels in more than a decade. More and more homeowners are wanting a variety of fresh herbs, vegetables, and fruits incorporated into their backyard garden plans.
Stress Relief
In the study, homeowners who strongly agree with the statements “Gardening is good for my mental health and well-being” and “Gardening helps me feel hopeful and positive” increased over last year. Gardening, and just spending time in an outdoor space that you have created, relieves stress, and makes us feel more positive.
Low Maintenance
Homeowners are interested more and more in low-maintenance “plant scapes”, particularly in Florida counties that experience significant frost threat in the winter. Hardy plants that can thrive up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit and slow growing shrubs and hedges are popular and save homeowners time and money in the long run. Landscape designs are also including more stone and rock options for bedding areas to get longer life out of their bedding materials.
Renovation Invitation
Let’s face it: For many of us, now is not the time to buy a house thanks to higher interest rates. In 2023 instead of moving, homeowners will invest in the home and yard they have—asking more of their indoor and outdoor spaces as they look ahead to several years at the same address. This means smarter use of side yards; incorporating features like a fireplace, covered outdoor gathering spots and entertainment features such as outdoor kitchens, bars and TVs.

Casual Conversations
Built-in outdoor fire pits and fireplaces are becoming more popular for outdoor entertaining and relaxation. Whether you prefer the convenience of a propane-fueled fire feature or a wood-burning set-up, homeowners are finding fire pits a welcome alternative to sitting in front of a television, for bringing a group together for good old-fashioned conversation.
